Spirulina

The first supplement that you must be careful with if you have an Autoimmune disease, is spirulina.

Spirulina is often considered a superfood because is known for boosting your immune system. It has very high protein and antioxidant content.

However, because of these same reasons, it can actually overstimulate the immune system in autoimmune disease patients and can lead to flare-ups of autoimmune diseases.

The way spirulina does is that it actually activates something called NF Kappa B in your system as well as natural killer cells. These are both part of your immune system.

By activating these immune cells, it causes overstimulation of the immune cells. This. in turn, can lead to the flare-up of various autoimmune diseases.

Some researches show that spirulina has been associated with flare-ups of some autoimmune diseases like pemphigus, erythema nodosum, dermatomyositis, and lupus.

Vitamin E

The second supplement on this list of worst supplements for autoimmune disease is Vitamin E.

As you might know, Vitamin E is a very helpful supplement that can support your skin health and offer various health benefits.

But here's the major problem: majority of the supplements sold of Vitamin E in grocery stores have synthetic versions of Vitamin E. They have something called DL-tocopherols. Now, these DL-tocopherols are actually derived from petroleum.

In fact, recent research studies show that people who consume vitamin E on a regular basis have a higher risk for heart disease as well as certain kinds of cancers.

So you have to be really careful with what kind of vitamin E you are consuming, especially if you do have an autoimmune condition. This is especially important to note if you have Lupus as an autoimmune condition.

This is because the Lupus Society puts a warning on their website that people with lupus should not be consuming Vitamin E supplements which are synthetic versions on a regular basis.

Echinacea

The third supplement on this list is echinacea.

Echinacea is a very common ingredient in cold and flu supplements because echinacea can boost your immune system and can help fight various kinds of viruses, especially cold and flu.

But again, there are research studies that show that echinacea causes hyperstimulation of the immune system in people with autoimmune diseases.

In fact, supplements that are sold in Europe that do have echinacea have a warning printed on them that people with autoimmune diseases should not be consuming this supplement.

Unregulated Ayurvedic supplements

The next supplements that you must be careful in consuming are over-the-counter unregulated Ayurvedic supplements.

The reason you need to avoid these unregulated Ayurvedic supplements is that they can be high in lead and arsenic.

We have several case report studies where people have been admitted to the hospital for liver failure because of being toxic to lead and arsenic as they were consuming these Ayurvedic supplements which have not been tested for lead and arsenic. And the levels of lead and arsenic in their blood were really very high.

Again, it is important to note that I am not saying that Ayurveda is really bad. However, there are several different kinds of Ayurvedic supplements in the market. A lot of these Ayurvedic supplements have high amounts of lead and arsenic in them.

So, it is very important that if you are buying a particular supplement, you make sure that they are testing these Ayurvedic supplements for especially lead, mercury, and arsenic.

Multivitamins

The last category of supplements on this worst supplements for Autoimmune diseases list is multivitamins.

The majority of people are consuming multivitamins regularly thinking that they are giving them the appropriate dosage of vitamins and minerals so that the body remains healthy.

We have several case report studies that these multivitamins might have very high doses of iodine which can lead to flare-ups of Hashimoto's.

Multivitamins

Some of these multivitamins have very high doses of Vitamin A, which is a fat-soluble Vitamin, and at high doses, it can be toxic to your liver.

Some of these vitamins, in fact, have medicines added to them which again can be really detrimental for your body.

Also, some of these multivitamins even have steroids added to them. Because of this, you feel good on them on a short-term basis, but in the long term, these steroids have the potential to destroy your immune system completely.

So, that's the reason again, whenever you're buying a multivitamin you look at the most natural version of it. In fact, I don't even recommend my clients to take multivitamins because I want them to take very specific vitamins and minerals for their diseases and not just a general vitamin or minerals.
